Welcome to Finding Something Lovely. Sip a cup of tea and stay awhile. Here you will find a little piece of calm and perhaps, something strangely lovely too.
Beauty lives all around us.
Happy Valentine’s Day!

There is nothing I love more than a day to tell my darling how much I adore him. It’s actually pathetic how much I love it!
This year we chose to not purchase gifts for Valentine’s Day. Hubs made me a delicious dinner and I made him dessert.
Do you want to see what I made?
Inspired by Bakerella’s cake box, I decided to try several new things: cake carving and working with fondant.
I made the marshmallow fondant the day before using Cake Journal’s recipe. It worked out extremely well! I used pink marshmallows and vegetable oil instead of Crisco. I let it rest overnight and found it to be very easy to work with and tasted good on the cake too!
The cake itself made me cry just a little bit. I had one recipe flop on me and I had to fall back on a chocolate cake recipe that I don’t particularly like the taste of, but the texture always comes out just right. Shaping it into the heart was not too difficult although getting the heart symmetrical was a bit of a learning curve. I made up for the lack of scrumptiousness and symmetry by adding a thick layer of buttercream to help even everything out. The extra cake was used to make the cake bites on top. These ones were made ‘man sized’ for Hubs.
Overall, I consider it a successful first try.Next time I would like to avoid using a chocolate buttercream which stained my light pink fondant and I really need to think about using a ruler to get things the right size. There was a lot of piecing on the side of the box which looked awful! The side strip of fondant really must stretch the entire perimeter of the cake-not half way only. Just consider that should you decide to make it! ha!
Next week is my wedding anniversary and so I really consider this time of the year lovely!
Happy Valentine’s day to you!
What did you do for your darling for V-day? Do you find a lot of pressure to conform to the chocolates and flowers game or do you prefer to bless one another with tasty treats?
